Music & Rituals

Having been to many rituals in my life, such as funerals, graduations, quinceañeras, birthday celebrations, weddings, I find that music at funerals are special. My grandmother passed away when I was 13, and then my grandfather when I was 15, then also my friend at high school at 17. Looking back at the music, and just the emotions that were running through the room was inexplainable. The feelings of sorrow, nostalgia, sadness, sense of loss is real. I think what makes music at a funeral so special is the melodies and the themes.

Music played at a funeral is generally slow and melancholic. Which naturally evokes the feeling of sadness and loss. The themes of the songs, are also generally about love, remembrance, loss, and that can resonate deeply with people. I remember going to my grandmother and grandfathers funeral crying and feeling a huge remembrance of memories I had with them. There hasn't been a similar feeling to those I felt at a funeral.

I wanted to add a couple songs, as well as music videos here. At my friends funeral, which was devastating, there were some songs that I will never forget, because of the weight and the feeling I felt at his funeral.

The first song, or music video is called "Photograph" by Ed Sheeran. Which is a very popular song which is about love, memory, and the power of photographs to capture and preserve moments. Listening to this song always reminds me of my friend Joey.

Next, I'd like to bring a song probably everybody has heard. It is called "A Thousand Years" by Christina Perri. This is a song where the melody and the lyrics really start to touch your emotions.

Lastly, I'd like to add one of my most memorable songs. I find this song to be sad, but also to make me happy that I had the chance to meet my deceased friends/family.

  1. Hi Kyle, really liked your blog by the way. Music and rituals does have a lot of emotions in between and the song you chose are really great for this topic. Photograph by Ed Sheeran is a great song and I can see why it is meaningful to you too. The other two songs are also great, especially the Sam’s Smith one, he is an excellent artist. Nice job

  2. Kyle Monk- Hey Kyle, for me your blog was very heart felt. It seems you lost a few loved ones close to you and that’s always hard. It’s a beautiful thing you were able to take away the rituals from those events. All 3 artist you picked are very well known and Christina Perri “A thousand years” will always be a favorite!

  4. Hey Kyle. I liked reading your blog, it was really deep and genuine. My blog was kind of set up in the same way. I lost a family member about 2 months ago and the reason I chose to write about it was because the music also stuck with me. I do like the song Christina Perri "A Thousand Years". I first heard it when I was watching the twilight movies and now very time, I hear it that's all I can think about. It's really interesting how these songs can change our modes, and we form a bond with them. Just always remember that connection and remember the good times that they left you with.
