Music and Family

Family, and the people that raise us, have a lot of influence on our lives. One major area is our music exposure. I grew up with my parents in California, as well as three older siblings in the household. My mom, who I interviewed for this assignment, has had the most influence on my music taste. Now that I am older, and away from home, my mom and I's musical bond and relationship have gotten much stronger. Here is how the dialogue went:

Me: What genre, or artist did you mainly listen to when you were younger?

Mom: I mainly listened to classic rock, bands like the Beatles, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Foreigner.

Me: How has music changed throughout the years? Or decades?

Mom: Now in the present day, there are more singular artists. There is more diversity and diversity within genres. For example, there are different types of hip-hop and 4 types of country music. Artists are also being more expressive. There are more narratives, more storytelling, and more messages being sent about society or something like abuse and pain. There were bands back in the day that performed multiple instruments. Now it is very individual-based.

Me: How has pop culture influenced people's music taste and your music taste?

Mom: There are a lot more female artists now. Madonna and Janet Jackson were some of the popular artists growing up that broke the mold for other female artists in the future. Because of more women artists, it got more women involved. There were also boy bands in the 90's that in a sense united families. The whole family would go to concerts and it would be an easy source of entertainment. The kids liked it, so it was more of a family outing to attend concerts where kids sang.

Me: What do you enjoy listening to the most now?

Mom: I enjoy everything. But I am a classic rock girl at heart. I listen to country as well, and hip hop occasionally. I listen to a lot of mixed music, like Post Malone and Morgan Wallen's collaboration. Classical rock is also timeless I think. People still listen to and enjoy the music today. It never really ages and that's why I love it.

Me: What do you think is the next progression for music in the near future? In 10 or 15 years from now?

Mom: That's a good question. I think there will be a lot of young artists, there will be a lot of young artists performing and doing shows. There will also be a lot of crossover of genres, a lot of mixing sounds, and creativity.

I previously mentioned The Beatles and The Eagles, and I wanted to drop the most famous songs that everybody has heard before. If you haven't heard of these songs, then I don't know if you are living!

  2. Hi Kyle, it's so clear how much your mom’s music taste has influenced you, and I also believe there will be more younger artist and lots of creative music. Now I know why those two aongs are so classic after listening to it.

  3. Your mom seems really cool! I agree with her about classic rock. I mean who does love classic rock every now and again. The future of music is a really good question and I can't believe I didn't think about it myself. I think the continuing mixing of genres will create an interesting blend of music in the future.

  4. It’s wonderful how your mom’s love for classic rock has shaped your music taste and brought you closer over the years. The most interesting part for me was her view on the evolution of music. It's cool to see how music has gotten more diverse. My favorite music selection from her list would be The Beatles. Their music truly crosses generations, much like classic rock as a whole.
